In ''MaG48HMML'', the main story's dialogue is significantly rewritten while Proto Mode is active, though it still follows the same beats.

Proto Man, known as Blues in Japan, is the first Robot Master created by Dr. Light. Considered the "older brother" to Rock and Roll, he first appeared in Mega Man 3 where he tested Mega Man in battle to see if he could beat Dr. Wily, as well as sometimes aiding him on his way through levels. Ever since, he has served as both an ally and occasional rival in his brother's many adventures to save the world from Wily's mad ambitions.

While a pivotal character in the classic Mega Man series, Proto Man has yet to play even a minor role in a MaGMML game's story. Starting with Make a Good Mega Man Level 2, however, he can appear in a level via the "objProtomanEncounter" object. By default, he will destroy all onscreen boss barriers, but he can also give the player a specific item instead (similar to his Mega Man IV and Mega Man V appearances). This encounter object has a few creation code variables:

  • itemDrop - Determines what object Proto Man will drop. If this is set to anything at all, Proto Man will not destroy any barriers.
  • instantLeave - If set to true, Proto Man will leave immediately after performing his actions, rather than lingering for a bit.

MaGMML Series Appearances

Make a Good Mega Man Level (Remastered)

In the original Make a Good Mega Man Level, Proto Man appears in Eddie's Shop as the single unlockable costume in the game. Other than that, he makes no physical appearance. In Make a Good Mega Man Level Remastered, the costume is instead purchased from Roll's costume shop. The remake also features a cameo from Proto Man when playing with Bass Mode active; dressed in a Wood Man costume, he laments being unable to return it due to the costume shop being closed.

Make a Good Mega Man Level 2

The Proto Man costume reappears in MaGMML2 as one of the few costumes available from the start. Proto Man himself also appears as an NPC in Tier 9 if said costume isn't currently equipped. He additionally shows up in the stage Sheriff Man, where he gives Mega Man a Noble Nickel upon being discovered.

Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level

Proto Man returns as a purchaseable costume in the SS Elroy's Double Action Boutique. Proto Man also appears as an NPC in Tier 11, standing at the top right corner past first place. When talked to, he will comment on Mega Man's current costume if he's wearing one – and will even wear a costume of Mega Man himself if the Proto Man or Break Man costume is in use. In the level Cossack's Playground, Proto Man briefly appears halfway through to give Mega Man an E-Tank.

Make a Good Mega Man Level: Episode Zero

Proto Man has a brief cameo during the game's credits, where he is seen dueling Bass in a mountain area that looks similar to that of Surveillance Canyon. Their battle is interrupted when both see a portal to Tier X briefly open up in the sky.

Proto Mode

MaGMML2, MaGMML1R, and MaG48HMML feature Proto Man as a playable character through the "Proto Mode" cheat. When activated, Mega Man will be replaced by Proto Man, who plays as he does in Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. When jumping, he uses his Proto Shield to reflect enemy projectiles, and he has a unique Charge Shot design and sound (if the Charged Buster upgrade is active in 2 and 1R, it will override said design). However, he also takes twice as much damage as Mega Man, and is knocked back twice as far after taking a hit. He also cannot change costumes, as the Costume Shop is closed in MaGMML2 and MaGMML1R if the cheat is active. He can still enter Double Action Boutique in MaG48HMML (and still activate the Love Survivor sidequest), but will be unable to purchase or change costumes. In MaG48HMML, the main story's dialogue is significantly rewritten while Proto Mode is active, though it still follows the same beats.
